[Let’s Study Achtung! Cthulhu Investigator’s Guide] Part 2: Home, Sweet Home and In the Service of One’s Country

Today we’re continuing with the Achtung! Cthulhu Investigator’s Guide Let’s Study articles with the next 2 chapters of the book, starting with Home, Sweet Home, a chronology of the events of the war from the point of view of those who lived in Britain, France and the USA.

This chapter doesn’t waste time in getting to the details, kicking off with the timeline for the British. This timeline hits various events of note to the average citizen, from the first BBC transmission to the London Blitz.

Scattered in the timeline are little bits of trivia, as well as one tip about what kind of scenario styles would work best in a campaign set in Britain to work with the tone and themes of Britain during WW2.

The next section details France, and follows the same format, again with trivia and notes in sidebars, and including a note on Scenario Styles as well. Espionage, sabotage and infiltration are all common to stories of WW2 set in France and have been called out here as well.

America gets its turn after France, which talks about relevant events of WW2. Under suggested scenarios the book suggests more noir and investigative yarns involving cults and enemy organizations.

In the Service of One’s Country

The next chapter discusses the world of the military in world War 2. They go into detail into each army, and the various military, intelligence and auxiliary services operational during the time.

Again Great Britain, France and the United States of America are given attention, but are now joined with a discussion on the German troops as well.

I honestly find the discussion on the Intelligence arms very interesting and already I can see how Achtung! Cthulhu would work well as a spy vs spy plus Cthulhu campaign in any system. I might not be saying much here, but let’s just say that the talk of the various troops are a goldmine for ideas on potential premises for an Achtung! Cthulhu campaign.

Tomorrow we’ll take a look at Your Country Needs You! The character creation chapter for Call of Cthulhu. I’m not sure if I’ll have time to actually build a character, but I’ll see what I can do.
