So here’s my attempt at trying to convert a character conceptually from the Legend of the Five Rings setting to the FATE ruleset. Obviously there won’t be any of the usual game-specific translations here, given that School Techniques and such belong in an entirely different conversion discussion that I’ll get to once I actually get the hang of the entire FATE ruleset.
Name: Shiba Tetsuya
Concept: Phoenix Clan Yojimbo
Trouble: Unrequited Lost Love
Background 1: Despite falling in love with the same woman, Tetsuya stood aside to let his best friend marry her.
Aspect: Paragon of Loyalty
Background 2: When his best friend passed away, Tetsuya raised his friend’s daughter, Yuri as his very own, even volunteering to be her yojimbo, or bodyguard.
Aspect: Tireless Guardian
Background 3: When it came to choose between honor and the protection of his ward, Tetsuya became a Ronin to take Yuri away and protect her social standing.
Aspect: Love Above Honor
Great (+4): Notice
Good (+3): Fight, Investigate
Fair (+2): Physique, Will, Contacts
Average (+1): Athletics, Empathy, Rapport, Stealth
Danger Sense (Notice)
Backup Weapon (Fight)
Attention to Detail (Investigate)
Overall conversion is pretty quick and painless. Given that I’ve got a preference for building characters using Concept first as opposed to rules-first, things flowed naturally when I chose not to worry too much about the stats. Certainly there are a few things that could use a bit of adding into (Like an Honor Stress Track, but I’ll work on that some other time) but this is a fairly accurate conversion. Shiba Tetsuya’s core essence is preserved, and one can easily get into the character.
I’m still trying to get the hang of making Aspects though, do you guys think this is correct, or should I open it up to more complications?
