[FATE] L5R Character Conversion: Shiba Tetsuya

So here’s my attempt at trying to convert a character conceptually from the Legend of the Five Rings setting to the FATE ruleset. Obviously there won’t be any of the usual game-specific translations here, given that School Techniques and such belong in an entirely different conversion discussion that I’ll get to once I actually get the hang of the entire FATE ruleset.

Name: Shiba Tetsuya
Concept: Phoenix Clan Yojimbo
Trouble: Unrequited Lost Love

Aspects:

Background 1: Despite falling in love with the same woman, Tetsuya stood aside to let his best friend marry her.
Aspect: Paragon of Loyalty

Background 2: When his best friend passed away, Tetsuya raised his friend’s daughter, Yuri as his very own, even volunteering to be her yojimbo, or bodyguard.
Aspect: Tireless Guardian

Background 3: When it came to choose between honor and the protection of his ward, Tetsuya became a Ronin to take Yuri away and protect her social standing.
Aspect: Love Above Honor

Skills:

Great (+4): Notice
Good (+3): Fight, Investigate
Fair (+2): Physique, Will, Contacts
Average (+1): Athletics, Empathy, Rapport, Stealth

Stunts:
Danger Sense (Notice)
Backup Weapon (Fight)
Attention to Detail (Investigate)

Stress Tracks:
Physical: 3
Mental: 3

Refresh 3

Overall conversion is pretty quick and painless. Given that I’ve got a preference for building characters using Concept first as opposed to rules-first, things flowed naturally when I chose not to worry too much about the stats. Certainly there are a few things that could use a bit of adding into (Like an Honor Stress Track, but I’ll work on that some other time) but this is a fairly accurate conversion. Shiba Tetsuya’s core essence is preserved, and one can easily get into the character.

I’m still trying to get the hang of making Aspects though, do you guys think this is correct, or should I open it up to more complications?

Some of those aspects seem hard to use in play. For example ‘Unrequited Lost Love.’ It sounds like both Tetsuya’s friend and his lost love are both dead, so how are you going to invoke this? How is the GM going to compel it? Maybe move ‘Love Above Honour’ up to your trouble, and come up with a new aspect for background 3. Maybe something that defines Yuki and how she will influence the campaign little bit more.

I’m no further along then you in figuring out Fate, so I may be off base here, but it also looks like your aspects are a bit too similar. If I was GMing for you, I’d want to go over each aspect with you and figure different ways we could invoke and compel them. If we couldn’t come up with at least 2 unique compels and invokes for each aspect, maybe you should retool.

    • Hey there Sean!

Good point on the Aspects. I’m still trying to figure out how to write up good ones that work for the GM while describing the character as well. I’ll sleep on it and see if I can come up with a version two of this that works better for a GM who might run for this character.

      • After giving it some more thought, here’s what I have so far:

        Trouble: Love Above Honor

Background 1: Despite falling in love with the same woman, Tetsuya stood aside to let his best friend marry her.

        Aspect 1: Paragon of Loyalty

Background 2: When his best friend passed away, Tetsuya raised his friend’s daughter, Yuri as his very own, even volunteering to be her yojimbo, or bodyguard. Unfortunately she’s been targeted for assassination…

Aspect 2: Tireless bodyguard to Isawa Yuri

Background 3: When it came to choose between honor and the protection of his ward, Tetsuya became a Ronin to take Yuri away and protect her social standing.

        Aspect 3: Wave Man

  2. Sean says:

I like ‘Wave man.’ It defines your capabilities and also how peasants, nobles and merchants will react to you. I don’t think that ‘Paragon of Loyalty’ defines anything about you that isn’t already covered by ‘Love above Honor’ and ‘Tireless bodyguard to Isawa Yuri.’ Obviously during background 1, Tetsuya had a close and respected relationship to members of two powerful families – maybe there’s a good aspect in that. Some still existing connections maybe, or knowledge of family secrets?

Also, I’d want more details on Isawa Yuri herself. Why was she a target of assassination? If Tetsuya is her protector, does that mean her family is wiped out, or may they somehow be involved in the assassination? And what do you see as her role in the campaign now? Is she a baby, a youth, or a young woman with talents and motives of her own? I might even ask you to create a separate character sheet for her.
