[L5R Clan Analysis: Scorpion] The Shosuro Family

How we’re looking at the Kakita Family’s counterpart: the Shosuro. Much like the Kakita, the Shosuro Family have their place beside the Bayushi. They are artists, performers and shadowy assassins. In public, they’re low-key and for good reason. The Shosuro is a family practically dripping in misdirection… almost everything from their art (as Actors, no less) to their activities involving clandestine sabotage and deniable ops, speak of their ability to make the most of not being seen.

But aside from their more notorious deeds, it would be a disservice to the Clan and the Family to not recognize the value of the Shosuro Family’s contributions to Rokugani performance art. When they’re not skulking about, the Shosuro are capable of creating masterful performances that cement their place as rivals to even the Kakita family. Despite the reputation of the Clan, I can imagine many a Shosuro whose soul truly is that of an artist, and whose performances are as sincere as they can publicly be, even if they must be confined to the stage.

Another less popular facet of the Shosuro family is their focus on herbalism and medicine. While their study on pharmacology is mostly motivated by the desire to understand and concoct new and more effective poisons or drugs, there’s still a significant value to the studies of the Shosuro, and having a Shosuro with this know-how is certainly a boon for those struck with illness and poison. Of course, the less kindly Shosuro might find ways to make it so that getting a cure meant that you live, but you wish you were dead since you’re now in debt to a Scorpion.

I like the way that the Shosuro compliments the Bayushi Family with their role as artists, performers, herbalists and… assassins. If the Bayushi are there to play up the reputation of the Clan, the Shosuro are there to make sure that the dirty deeds are done while everyone’s too busy staring at the Bayushi. In some ways, this is perhaps one of the most symbiotic family relationships I’ve seen in all of L5R next to the Shiba and the Isawa of the Phoenix Clan.
