[Mage: the Awakening] Endangered Species – Shifting Gears

As of last session, I’ve been focused on shifting gears with regards to my Mage: the Awakening campaign,”Endangered Species” We’re about eight sessions into the campaign as of last weekend, and the game is finally starting to take shape. The introductions took longer than I had anticipated, but with the group now officially becoming a cabal, and a fully-functioning Consilium in place, I can start focusing on stories that will impact the player characters on grounds of how their society sees them, and reacts to what they do.

No name for the cabal yet, but their adventures have earned the attentions of the other members of the Consilium. Given the fact that the cabal have managed to score a considerable number of successes when it comes to finding strange things in Tokyo and dealing with them, the rest of the cabals are slowly coming to realize that the new cabal is a force to be reckoned with. There’s little doubt that they’ll receive a few invitations from the other cabals to build up some form of alliances or at least friendships. There’s an internal struggle for power in the Consilium, and the side with more mages wins, especially in an age where there aren’t any new mages.

That said, I’m moving on to other threats as well. So far the threats have all been largely benign, save for the Jorogumo incident. I’m opening the book right now and I’ll start applying some villains that will really give the cabal something to worry about.

I haven’t forgotten about the Awakening Crisis. I’ve got more than a few ideas for what to do about it, and how it will manifest in the Fallen world more strongly in a manner that will be disturbing to a lot of people. I want this Awakening Crisis to feel like a real threat after all, and not just some passive force. Now that players have been eased into the game at a rate that has everyone confident in what they can do, I think I can move on to the next phase.

  1. Hikkikomori says:

Especially since most threats that you’ve thrown at us have been mostly external. Kill dragon, get loots.

Except for Episode Zero, but we let the big boys handle that one.

The yakuza-spider symbiosis would have been a bit trickier if they hadn’t been the dregs of society. So in a way, that is already foreshadowing future threats to come.
