[Let’s Study: V:tR] The Covenants

Okay, so I’m a vampire, but what do I do?

It’s not unusual to hear this sort of question with regards to players who are making characters for the first time in a game of Vampire: the Requiem, and I understand the sentiment.  After all, I found myself asking the same question when I was thinking about what kind of campaign to run with regards to the game.  In some ways, this is the question that V:tR hopes to address with the Covenants.

I’ll have to admit that the Covenants look rather messy at first glance.  Unlike the Orders of Mage: the Awakening, they aren’t exactly meant to be working together in an organized fashion.  Instead, each of the Covenants are an community, a religion and a political party all rolled into one.  Each of the Covenants provides its members with allies and a purpose, powerful things in an existence that is by its very nature lonely and without purpose.  Therefore, it comes as no surprise that the vampires that belong to these Covenants are some of the most driven.

That said, each of the Covenants is motivated by causes that are, for all intents and purposes, eternal:

  • The Carthian Movement seek to overthrow the social order and find a perfect new model in its place
  • The Circle of the Crone strive to embody the ideal of their namesake, bringer of life and the proverbial “mother” of monsters
  • The Invictus seek to obtain and maintain power and influence and maintain the Masquerade
  • The Lancea Sanctum perpetuate their religion across all of the Kindred
  • The Ordo Dracul aspire to evolve the vampiric condition into something greater

I’m sure these are fairly broad generalizations, as the respective covenants have much greater depth than these one-sentence summaries may imply.  And towards that goal, I’m going to see if these actually hold water once I start looking at each Covenant in turn in the succeeding articles in this series.
