“Love me love me
Say that you love me
Fool me fool me
Go on and fool me”

-Lovefool, by The Cardigans

If the Frankenstein lineage consists of creatures born from a mix of mismatched parts to form a horrific whole, then the Galatieds are the opposite in the sense that while they two are animated corpses, they are also works of art.  And as such, the Galatieds are obsessed with being loved.  Without love, without adoration, they feel empty and devoid of meaning.  Luckily for them, they possess an unearthly beauty… but even such beauty cannot stop mortals from feeling ill at ease around them.

Born from Mythology

The Galateids claim their Lineage from Galatea, a statue that was animated by the goddess Aphrodite to answer the prayers of Galatea’s creator, Pygmalion.  While the myth itself claims that Pygmalion and Galatea lived happily ever after, there were other, darker versions that spoke of how Pygmalion was not exactly of sane mind.  These versions spoke of how Pygmalion, disgusted at the women of his time, decided that he could do better and animated the body of a beautiful woman with the objective of creating a perfect woman of his design.

Sanguine Personalities

Galatieds are skewed towards the attributes of a Sanguine personality.  They are amorous, sensual and needy… they thrive on attention, and need the admiration of others in order to assure themselves that everything is going to be okay.  They are also possessed of great deal of creative and social energy, making them quite the go-getter when it comes to trying new things and thriving in situations where they have to live by their wits.

Given that the Galatieds enjoy the benefits of having a Mesmerizing Appearance, they make for the best bet of a Promethean throng to get along in social situations.  They are the facemen and women of the team, and are perhaps the only hope of a given throng to be able to get past many of the difficulties inherent in interacting with humanity.

Being a player that enjoys taking on Social situations in RPGs, the Galatieds offer an interesting situation for me.  On one half, they’re mechanically advantaged… but on the other, their neediness is something that deeply disturbs me.  I’m admittedly an introvert (no, seriously,) and so thinking of a character who cannot stand being isolated is something that bothers me.  These are the sorts of hangers on that make for stalkers, obsessed fans, dangerously jilted lovers.  Perhaps this is why the Galateids are so scary.  They’re an ugly part of us that we don’t want to acknowledge, they’re people with the jealous, needy setting permanently pegged to 11.

I know that the World of Darkness is all about playing the monsters, but this one really hits a nerve for me… so that means that the writers did a great job, at least as far as I’m concerned.

Can’t stay out of the limelight?

“I’ve had a great career as you know it as a bodybuilder, as an actor, and as a politician. Now I’m going to be a private citizen once again.”
