I know that I’ve written a lot about the Legend of the Five Rings RPG before, so many of those who have been with this blog know that that game is one of the most seminal influences to my GMing career. Now, after what feels like a long time, I’m going to be back in Rokugan, but this time as a player in a game.
Fellow GM Sheimaruen will be running the game, with the premise that he’ll start off before the events of the Scorpion Clan Coup, and spin things off from there. From what I know so far, his intention is to run a game that centers on the characters, so having characters with a well thought-out background will be essential to get the most of the campaign.
For this game I’m looking at making a character that belongs to the noble Lion Clan. Peerless warriors that adhere to a somewhat inflexible form of Bushido, the Lion Clan extols courage in the face of danger. Furthermore the Lion boast of having the most talented tacticians of the empire as well as having the largest army, making the idea of angering them as a Clan a suicidal notion to most other Clans.
I’ve not gotten everything down just yet, but I will be posting my character as soon as I’m done putting it together. That said I’m gunning for a Matsu Berserker, but I don’t have a full concept in my head yet. Since the game kicks off in the first weekend of March, that gives me a bit of time to think of a backstory.
Definitely looking forward to it

how cool that you get a chance to play!
While I love the Lion Clan and the Matsu family amuses me, I have never been able to play a Matsu Berserker . . . The whirlwind of death who dies if they do not kill their enemy just is not my style.
Good luck and have fun!
Hey Sean!
You know what, I’ve never actually seen anyone play a Matsu Berserker. Everyone talks about it, but I’ve never personally seen anyone try it out, which makes it a perfect candidate for a character choice for me. Sure I’m not certain if I’ll actually survive three sessions, but who knows, right?
Oh go and mingle with the Lions, those savages with a one-track mind. Where has the love for the grace and elegance of the Crane Clan gone these days?
No seriously, good to hear you get a chance to play L5R. Just keep us readers up to date about the campaign
Hah!
See, this is exactly what I love about L5R. Few games manage to foster such fervent loyalty to factions that trash talk is an accepted fact of life.
Don’t worry, I’ve been lax about Actual Play reports for the past few campaigns, but I’ll make sure to get started on it when we begin in March.
I’m still not sure of what to play.
Too lazy to play courtier.
Too cheesy to play shugenja.
Might go monk. But, even then, still unsure.
