I’m not certain why, but games like TOON and Paranoia seem to fail to strike a chord in me. Such games are deliberately geared to be “funny” but they fail to spur on any sort of ideas in my brain. While I understand the intent of these games, I just can’t seem to be able to put on the funny GM hat that will actually help me run a session of those games without the game falling apart.
I suppose Comedy games are ones that I can’t run at all without significant effort. It’s almost as if I have blinders on for that particular genre that makes it as difficult as rolling a boulder uphill. Perhaps it’s because of my focus on Consequences in a game that makes that genre an antithesis to it. Whimsy after all, willfully ignores most of the impact of negative consequences for the sake of comedic effect.
Most of the other genres seem possible to me. I can do Action, Adventure, some Mystery, Horror and even a little Romance, but Comedy in and of itself is beyond me. Humor in my games is welcome though, but that often stems from the interplay of personalities of the player characters as opposed to me planning anything beforehand.
How about you guys? Are there any genres that you’re incapable of running?
