On Hiatus for the Week.
Hey guys,
I’ll be taking a short break from posting regularly from today until Friday. Things have been sorta strange here lately, what with Typhoon Ketsana (Ondoy) submerging Metro Manila in raging 20 foot flood water… and a second one on the way.
That said, I should consider myself lucky to have taken a leave from work for a week even before the storm hit. I didn’t expect Ketsana to leave the kind of mess it did, and was looking forward to a relaxing week off with time to read up on my PDFs, and plan for my games. Now things are quiet, and there’s a nervous silence over the city. Stores are running out of food stock, traffic hasn’t sorted itself out, and several areas in the metro are still flooded.
You can imagine how difficult it is to try and write something cheery and escapist at the moment.
That said, I’m not quite abandoning the blog completely, and will see if I can post something during the week… I’m just setting expectations, just in case people wonder where I might have gone off to.

GM Burnout Prevention
If there’s one thing that our gaming group is blessed with, it would be the fact that out of the nine or so regulars we have, four of us are GMs. Given this rather generous ratio of GM to players, we’ve managed to institute a means of trying to avoid GM burnout by cycling GMs every few campaigns or so.
This isn’t a hard and fast rule by any stretch. Sometimes a GM is hot, and all his creative juices pumping out like there’s no tomorrow… in which case the said GM can run two, even three short campaigns. More often than not though, is the fact that after running a campaign, a GM deserves to take some time off.
When I take breaks I try to make sure I do stuff to help me recharge. These include:
- Immersing myself in new inputs – Video games, movies, books, just about any media will do. I try not to think of them in the context of gaming though.
- Play in someone else’s game – Playing is a great way to recharge batteries. Finally being on the other side of the screen for once is a relief for any GM.
- Read about gaming - This is where the RPG Bloggers Network comes in really handy. Even when I’m burned out, I get to draw a lot of enthusiasm from other members of the community. There’s a lot of brilliant writers out there, and I pick up a thing or two from them no matter what system they play, whether it’s d20, White Wolf, or even any number of homebrew or indie games.

[Fantasy Craft] Cheating Death (with Example!)
Another subsystem unique to the Fantasy Craft ruleset is the Cheating Death mechanic. Cheating Death, as the name implies is a subsystem that may help in bringing a dead PC back to life without the need for scrolls of resurrection or paying a boatload of the party’s money to the local temple. Instead, Cheating Death imparts rules mechanics to what is normally the province of the more Narrative style of play.

[Fantasy Craft] Customizing your Campaign with Campaign Qualities
One of the subsystems in Fantasy Craft that really caught my attention was tucked away in the last section of the book, in Chapter 7: Worlds. Campaign Qualities are little tweaks, similar to switches that can alter a Fantasy Craft Campaign in small but significant ways.
With the use of Campaign Qualities, it’s possible for a GM to take the generic Fantasy Craft ruleset then configure them to make it cleave closer to their vision. To demonstrate, here’s a few examples of Campaign Qualities applied that would help configure Fantasy Craft to different kinds of games:

[Fantasy Craft] Sample Combat: Zhao Meng vs Hsi Rong in a Restaurant Rumble!
Well then, now that we’re familiar with the kinds of characters in the Jianghu Wuxia Setting, I think it’s about time I try out a sample combat. Something simple first, with both Threat level 1 Standard and Special NPCs against a level 1 character.
For the purposes of this exercise, we’ll be using Zhao Meng, the Drunken Master from a previous post.
The scenario takes place in a busy restaurant inside the poor quarters of the Imperial City. Hsi Rong, a corrupt Magistrate, hears of the presence of Zhao Meng in the city, and is determined to enact a little revenge for an earlier slight.

[Fantasy Craft] Sample 20th Level Character – Mou Ming, the Nameless Saint of Swords (Crusading Human Vanguard Soldier 10 / Paladin 10) [Long Post]
To respond to some feedback over at RPG.net, I’ve decided to try my hand at building a level 20 character for the World of Jianghu Wuxia Setting, that I’ve been slowly building in the blog. I have to admit that building a character at level 20 took me some time, especially given that I’m not that used to higher level d20 games.
That said, I’m happy with what I’ve come up with:

[Fantasy Craft] Sample Magic Item: Resplendent Harmony & the Azure Dragon Fan
Today we’re looking at how Fantasy Craft handles magic Items, and to keep with our theme of sticking to the Jianghu Wuxia Setting, I’ve built two Magic Weapons that could feasibly exist in a game set in Jianghu: An Magic Scholar’s Sword (Jian) and a Magic Fan Blade.

[Exalted 2nd Edition] Dawn of Sorrows, Session 1
Before anything I’d like to apologize to my players about the length of the session. Yesterday started off really late, and I was still fumbling with my first few steps in running exalted. First sessions hardly ever go off with a bang (I remember the most interesting first session I’ve run was Deadlands: Reloaded!) but this is really no excuse.
That said, due to an imbalance between groups, one of my players, who was due to play the exiled Delzhan noble, Razziq Sidion Orkhan, opted to switch to the Dark Ages game running alongside my game.
I’ll confess that I still don’t have a good handle on the other character concepts, so I opted to try the “ordinary day” approach, to see how the players would fit into their characters, and envision what an average day is. I also ran out of time to run for Silver Countess, who was due to play her character: Cyrille Morning Star.
That said, here’s a short synopsis of what I did get to run:

[Exalted 2nd Edition] D-Day for Dawn of Sorrows Tomorrow!
After months of yakking about my views of Exalted, and how I would run it, tomorrow is the day I put my money in my mouth. Dawn of Sorrows is the culmination of a lot of theory, and very very little practical experience with the system.
And so I put together the campaign with the sole intent of focusing on telling the origin stories of the newly returned Solar Exalted. The game would follow them from the days when they were mortals struggling to survive in a world dominated by gods that walked the earth, and the events that follow their Exaltation.
I try to banish my set expectations, to erode all of my previous opinions of the game and give the closest approximation of a fair shake. There is greatness there, I imagine, tucked away in the game, underneath the charms and mechanics and buckets of dice.
In some odd way, I also want to thank my players even before we even begin. This is admittedly an experiment, a test to see if there is something in this game that I can run for those who hated it, without having to resort to the tropes and play styles that the game became famous for.
Which is why I am perfectly willing to say that I’m willing to pull the plug on this game the moment that it is perceived to be uninteresting or unenjoyable. I’ll simply throw in the towel, put aside my Exalted books, and never mention running the game again.
That said, I’m not without hope. With all the preparations I’ve done, and the notes I’ve taken, it would be unlikely for me to truly botch this game. I’ve gone and reviewed all the characters, all their motivations and the plot hooks that their players are hoping to see. Armed with that knowledge, I’ll at least have some means to add legs to this campaign.
And so I’ve hit this point. All my preparations up to now are done, and there’s nothing left to do but to gird myself, slap my visor down and charge headlong to fame or obscurity!
