Top 3 Tabletop Roleplaying Games in the Philippines

July 12, 2007

The Philippines isn’t exactly the first country that pops into mind when you think about roleplaying games, but there are a lot of gamers here who have tried at least one of the following games:

  1. Dungeons & Dragons - No surprise here, honestly.  D&D is a familiar name a majority of gamers here in the Philippines, even if some still remember it only for the whole “Work of the Devil” stuff that came out back in the eighties.  Still, if you want a sure-fire way to find a gaming group in the Philippines, try going to sites like AEGIS or Tabletopwars and ask around.  There’s bound to be a group somewhere playing D&D.
  2.  World of Darkness – White Wolf games enjoy a certain amount of popularity here in the Philippines as well.  While majority of the groups are fans of the Old World of Darkness, there are some groups who have begun the slow transition to the New World of Darkness.  My own gaming group is starting off with Mage: the Awakening, and several people in my group (including my girlfriend) are eagerly awaiting Changeling: the Lost.
  3. Legend of the Five Rings – Given the popularity of anime here, as well as the near fanatical fanbase from the CCG, L5R is still a popular rpg.  Unfortunately, availability has become an issue, as their local distributor claims that Alderac Entertainment has been remiss when it comes to delivering their products.  I’m taking the distributor’s word with a grain of salt though.

Of course, there are other game systems which have begun to get attention in the country.  Given difficulties with regards to availability of books, most gamers have begun to buy books over the internet (I, myself can testify that the people of Noble Knight Games are very easy to work with).

Because of that, isolated rpg groups have shown up talking about some games that would never have reached these shores.  The HERO System, GURPS, Savage Worlds, Shadowrun, Exalted and even some games from Dream Pod 9 just to name a few.

You should look into iron kingdoms if you have an interest in steampunk. The resource books are great and the amount of detail they have on the IK world is astounding.

Iron Kingdoms has caught my eye many a time, Dr. Leng. I’m already considering taking a dive into Miniatures again. :D
